An Essay from Armory College Prep Student Azhar Uddin
I heard about ACP (Armory College Prep) from my former track teammate Ifeanyi who told me how much help he received from this particular program. Through his description, I realized how determined ACP was to get you into the college of your dreams. As I stepped into the ACP classroom I felt chills going down my back. I saw many people working hard on SAT Prep, college writing and even getting prepared for an interview. I searched for Ifeanyi but he was nowhere to be found. I had no idea what to do but then suddenly, Mr. Clayton came up to me and asked what I was looking for and I told him I wanted to apply to ACP. With a smile he extended his hand for a warm handshake. He gave me a welcoming vibe as he introduced me to the rest of the ACP members and teachers.
Throughout my SAT classes with Michael and Chris, I was able to gain a vast amount of knowledge. From the mini word problem, Chris showed us on the board, I was able to learn new techniques for solving math problems. The syllabus which Chris created and recommended for everyone to do helped me acquire knowledge of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and even Calculus. All of this helped me obtain a great score on the math section of the SATS. When it was time for English, Michael would sometimes read an article with us and then we would answer some questions. The articles we read were very informative and presented knowledge about the real world. Since Michael went over the questions we did in class I was able to understand the minor mistakes I made when answering reading based questions or in the area of grammar.
Mr. Clayton was a tremendous help to me, as well because he would give me advice about colleges that were best suited for me. He gave me suggestions about colleges and he told me the truth about which ones I could really get into. This was very helpful because he didn’t lie to me or give me false hope and I thank him for that.
Mary Rose Synek who is the writing counselor for the ACP program spent many hours with me. Without her I would not be attending NYU. With her help I was able to learn how to become a better writer by becoming more aware of my sentence structure. She taught me to always re-read my sentences and ask myself if the sentence made sense. She has taught me to open my mind to new things, such as acting. At first, I thought acting was not for me because I did not like speaking out loud or expressing emotion in public. However, by practicing with Mary Rose I was able to realize that I enjoyed acting and performing. The summer showcase is an experience I will never forget.
Overall, my experience at ACP has been truly unforgettable. The knowledge I obtained has made me the man I am today. I can without a doubt say that ACP has been like a second family for me. From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank them for everything they have done for me. It was honor and privilege to work with such great people. Thank you!
