In The Heights, Seniors AIM High!

Seniors AIM High is a new initiative that brings together older adults ages 60+ from Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem.

More than 200 senior citizens have signed up to take part in this no-cost program so far! Sessions take place on Tuesday mornings at The Armory in partnership with Associates in Internal Medicine (AIM) from Columbia University Irving Medical Center, rain or shine!

Meetings begin with light, dynamic warm-ups to fun music. Then, participants take to the “fastest track in the world” track for laps of walking, jogging, or running. The oval’s infield soon after transforms into the perfect place for more guided exercise, featuring dances to upbeat tunes. To round out one hour of of movement, seniors are seated for a 30-minute, Columbia doctors-led discussion about relevant health and longevity topics. So far, topics covered have included preparing to visit a doctor, diabetes, sleep, and more!

Participants received t-shirts and fitness trackers (and help setting them up!) to count their steps. Another incentive for seniors with good attendance has been receiving a new pair of shoes to continue their wellness journey.

Anyone who is interested in registering themselves or a loved one for this program or is in need of more information should email aimhigh@armorytrack.com. Be sure to follow @thearmoryfndn on Instagram and Twitter for coverage and updates!
